We Find the Defendant Guilty...of Pleasure.

What is it, exactly, that makes us feel like we have to be ashamed to like certain things? Why do we feel the need to immediately start throwing down caveats and justifications after admitting to enjoying something that otherwise might be considered "beneath" us?

These questions came to me last night while enjoying snowboarding comedy Out Cold (my recommendation) with some friends.

As someone whose tastes can run a little toward the artsy, I found myself unable to recommend the movie without disclaimers. (Some would tell you all my recommendations should come with similar warnings, but I digress.) The point is, I'm not "supposed" to like Out Cold. It's a silly mess of a slapstick comedy. But I do. And not in an ironic, let's-laugh-at-this-and-not-with-it sense. I just like it. It's hilarious. So there.

Is it too late for a New Year's Resolution? How about just a general resolution, then? Stop worrying, and love your guilty pleasures. There's enough to worry about without worrying about what makes you happy, too.

Disclaimer: Um...unless you're a sadist, or a Twilight fan, or something. I mean, we have to draw the line somewhere.

Disclaimer to the disclaimer: Just kidding, Teams Edward and Jacob. Return to your regularly scheduled pining for fictitious 17-year olds. Sadists: you, I was serious about. Knock it off.

Well good. Because I don't feel guilty about liking Beastmaster at all.

Sorry. Mary told me you were blogging a few days ago and this was the perfect opportunity to say hello.
