The New Pornographers Get "Together"

I attended the DC version of "Get Together", the New Pornographers' pre-release album listening party. Though it did not offer the free drinks that the invitation promised, and though the album itself was mostly drowned out by chatter, it was nevertheless fun times all around. And NPR put up the album a couple days later so everyone can hear it without even having to pay $7 for a Bell's Oberon. (DC is going to ruin me.)

If you don't know the NPs, their angular, off-kilter yet perfectly poppy electric goodness should appeal to...well, everyone. Seriously, they've been one of the most consistent bands in indie rock for the past decade or so, and this, their 5th full-length, sounds at first listen like it will continue the streak.

Hailing from Canada (but don't hold that against them), the NPs are something of a "supergroup", though they forcefully resist that nomenclature. Still, it's worth noting that the three main singer/songwriters all have vibrant alternate musical projects. The ringleader, A.C. Newman, is a veteran of rock band Zumpano and has two solo albums to his credit. Neko Case is a justly revered alt-country goddess, and Dan Bejar is the inscrutable, perhaps insane, mastermind behind art-rockers Destroyer, and the oddest tracks in the NPs' catalog.

Enjoy their soon-to-be released album streaming at the NPR site, link below.

P.S. - How does NPR now get exclusives on every hot album coming out? Those argyle-sweater wearing, latte-drinking liberal commie pinkos must have Rahm Emanuel out knocking heads for them, Pope love 'em.

P.P.S. - I got a free poster. I would have gotten one signed by A.C. Newman, but I was not forceful enough in answering the trivia questions.
